How to See What My Facebook Ad Looks Like
You’ve spent hours crafting the perfect headline, selecting the best image or video, and writing compelling ad copy. You're ready to launch your Facebook ad campaign, but there's one nagging question: "What will this actually look like to a real user?" This guide will walk you through the simple, built-in methods Facebook provides to preview your ads exactly as your audience will see them across every placement, from the News Feed to Instagram Stories and beyond.
Why You Should Always Preview Your Facebook Ads
Hitting "Publish" without a final check is like sending an important email without proofreading it. A quick preview can save you from costly and embarrassing mistakes. It’s a vital quality control step that allows you to:
- Catch Typos and Errors: A simple typo in a headline or a broken link in your URL can kill your ad's performance before it even gets started.
- Verify Creative Across Placements: An image that looks amazing in a square Facebook feed post might get awkwardly cropped in a vertical Instagram Story. Previewing lets you see how your creative adapts to different formats so you can make adjustments.
- Check the User Experience: Click on your call-to-action (CTA) button in the preview. Does it go to the right landing page? Does the page load quickly? This is your chance to experience the ad funnel from the user's perspective.
- Get Stakeholder Approval: If you need a client or your manager to sign off on an ad, sending a preview link is far more professional than sending a folder of disconnected images and text files.
Thankfully, Meta makes it easy to see exactly what you're about to spend money on. Let's look at the primary ways to do it.
Method 1: Using the Ad Preview Tool in Ads Manager
The most common and direct way to see your ad is right inside the Ads Manager while you're building or editing your campaign. This built-in tool is your command center for previews.
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Navigate to Your Ad: Open up your Meta Ads Manager. Go to the campaign and ad set containing the ad you want to preview. Click on the specific ad itself and then click the Edit button.
- Locate the Preview Pane: On the right-hand side of the ad creation screen, you'll see a live preview of your ad. This is the main preview window and it will update in real-time as you make changes to your copy, creative, or destination URL.
- Explore Different Placements: Above the ad preview, you’ll see a dropdown menu that likely defaults to showing mobile and desktop feeds. You can click this to view how your ad specifically looks on different placements like Instagram Stories, Facebook Marketplace, Messenger inbox, or Audience Network articles. Be sure to check the most important ones for your campaign, especially mobile vs. desktop and Feed vs. Stories. An ad optimized for one often looks out of place on the other.
- Use the Advanced Preview Options: Just below the placement dropdown, look for the share icon (it looks like a paper airplane). Clicking this gives you more powerful preview options which we'll cover in the next method.
This method is fantastic for a quick, on-the-fly check as you're building the campaign. You can spot an awkwardly cropped image or a truncated headline and fix it immediately.
Method 2: Sharing an Ad Preview for Review
What if your boss, a client, or a team member who doesn't have Ads Manager access needs to see the ad? Taking screenshots is clumsy and doesn't show the interactive elements. The best way is to generate a shareable preview link.
How to Share a Preview:
- Follow the steps above to get to the ad editing screen with the preview pane visible.
- Click the Share icon (the paper airplane logo) located in the upper right of the preview pane.
- A dropdown menu will appear with a few choices. Click on "Share a link."
- Meta will generate a unique URL for you. You can copy this link and send it to anyone via email, Slack, or any messaging platform. When they open it, they’ll see an exact replica of the ad without needing access to your ad account.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind:
- Links Expire: The generated preview links are temporary and usually expire after 30 days. If a stakeholder tries to view it after that period, it won't work. You’ll just have to generate a new one.
- Sending to Your Phone: In that same "Share" menu, you'll also see an option to "Send notification to Facebook app." This is incredibly useful for seeing how the ad feels on your own mobile device. Select this, and a push notification will show up on your phone. Tapping it will open the ad directly in your Facebook or Instagram app feed for the most realistic preview possible.
This shareable link feature is a lifesaver for agencies and in-house marketers who need to manage an approval process.
Method 3: Finding Your Ad in the Meta Ad Library
What if your ad is already live and you just want to see it out in the world? Or maybe you want to check out a competitor's ad for inspiration. For this, the Meta Ad Library is your best friend.
The Ad Library is a publicly available, searchable database of all active ads running across Meta's platforms. It was created to increase advertising transparency, but it doubles as a powerful tool for marketers.
How to Use the Ad Library:
- Go to the Meta Ad Library.
- Under "Search Ads," select the country and choose the category "All Ads."
- In the search box, type in the name of your Facebook Page (or any Page you want to research) and select it from the list.
- You'll now see a gallery of every single active ad that the Page is currently running. You can see the creative, the copy, when it started running, and versions seen by different audiences if they’re using Dynamic Creative.
This is a great way to confirm that your approved ads are live and to see the complete ad portfolio of any brand, including your own.
Accessing the Ad Library from Your Page
You can also access the Ad Library for your own page right from your Facebook Page admin view. Simply go to your page, scroll down to the "Page Transparency" section on the left sidebar, and click "See All." In the pop-up, there's a section called "Ads from this Page." Click "Go to Ad Library" to see all your active ads immediately.
Common Problems and Troubleshooting
Even with these tools, you might run into a few hurdles. Here’s how to handle common issues.
"Why don't I see my newly published ad?"
When you publish a new ad or campaign, it has to go through Meta's ad review process. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours (and sometimes longer). Your ad won't be visible in the Ad Library or appear organically until it's been approved and starts gaining impressions.
"The preview looks different from the final live ad."
This can happen if you are using Meta's Dynamic Creative feature, which automatically mixes and matches your provided headlines, images, and descriptions to find the best-performing combinations. The preview tool can only show you one possible combination at a time, whereas the live campaign serves up dozens of variations. The Ad Library will often show you multiple combinations of these active dynamic ads.
"My ad looks terrible in Stories."
This is the most common reason to use the placement preview. A rectangular (4:5) image from the news feed will be shown in a vertical (9:16) Story with big colored bars at the top and bottom. It looks cheap and unprofessional. The best practice is to always use the Asset Customization feature in the ad-level settings to upload a specifically-sized piece of creative for each major placement ratio (e.g., a vertical video for Stories/Reels, a square image for Feeds).
Final Thoughts
Previewing your ad is a simple but non-negotiable step in the campaign creation process. Whether you’re using the live editor in Ads Manager, sharing a link with a client, or reviewing live ads in the Ad Library, taking a moment to check your work ensures your budget is spent on ads that are error-free, visually appealing, and optimized for every placement.
Of course, a perfect-looking ad is just the beginning. The real work is in analyzing its performance, but that process often involves tangled spreadsheets and hours spent manually pulling data. We built Graphed to remove that friction. After integrating my Facebook Ads and Google Analytics accounts, I can ask questions in plain English like "Create a dashboard showing my Facebook Ads funnel, from clicks to conversions" and get an interactive, real-time report in seconds. It saves countless hours of building reports and gives us clear, immediate answers on what's truly driving results.
