Cody Schneider8 min read

If you've recently migrated to Google Analytics 4, you might be wondering where some of your favorite reports from Universal Analytics (UA) have gone. Finding the landing page report is a common point of confusion, but thankfully, the data is still there - you just need to know where to look. This tutorial will guide you through how to find your landing page data, customize a report for easy access, and use the powerful Explorations tool for deeper analysis.

What Are Landing Pages and Why Do They Matter?

Before we jump into GA4, let's quickly clarify what we mean by a "landing page." In the context of Google Analytics, a landing page is the very first page a user sees when they arrive on your website for a specific session. It's their entry point. It's not just your homepage or a specifically designed sales page, any page can be a landing page.

Analyzing your landing page data is critical for understanding your marketing and content performance. It helps you answer important questions like:

  • Which content is attracting the most visitors? Identifying your most popular entry points tells you what topics resonate with your audience.
  • How effective are my marketing campaigns? If you're running ads that point to a specific page, that page's performance as a landing page is a direct measure of your campaign's success.
  • Where are my users coming from? You can segment your landing page report by source/medium to see which channels (e.g., Google Organic Search, Facebook Ads, email newsletters) are driving traffic to specific entry pages.
  • Is my website providing a good first impression? Low engagement or poor conversion rates on your top landing pages can signal a problem with page performance, messaging, or user experience that needs to be fixed.

How to Find Landing Pages in GA4: The Quick Method

Unlike Universal Analytics, GA4 does not have a dedicated "Landing Page" report visible in the standard navigation menu. However, you can access the data by modifying an existing report. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you there.

Step 1: Navigate to the Pages and Screens Report

In your GA4 property, start by looking at the navigation menu on the left side of your screen. Follow this path:

  1. Click on Reports.
  2. Expand the Engagement section.
  3. Click on Pages and screens.

You will now see a table showing data for all the pages on your site, but this is not your landing page report yet. By default, it shows "Page path and screen class" as the primary dimension, which includes every page view, not just the first page of a session.

This table shows all pages that have been viewed. We need to tell GA4 we only want to see pages that started a session.

Step 2: Change the Primary Dimension

This is where the magic happens. To switch from an all-pages view to a landing-page-only view, you need to change the primary dimension of the table.

  • In the top-left corner of the data table, click the small down arrow next to the current primary dimension (which should be Page path and screen class).
  • This will open a search box pop-up. Type "landing" in the search box.
  • Select Landing page + query string from the list that appears.

Just like that, the report's dimension will change, and the table will now display data for your landing pages. The table is now correctly showing you the first pages users landed on during their sessions. The metrics in the report, like "Views," will automatically adjust to show metrics relevant to these pages as entry points.

Create and Save a Custom Landing Page Report

Having to perform those clicks every single time you want to check landing page data is tedious. The best practice is to customize the default report and save it so you can access it directly from your navigation menu later. Here’s how you can save yourself time in the long run.

Step 1: Customize the Current Report

Once you've changed the dimension to "Landing page + query string," look for the pencil icon in the top right corner of the report, next to the date range selector and "share" icon. Click that pencil icon to Customize report.

Step 2: Set the Default Dimension

On the customization screen that slides in from the right, you'll see a section called Report Data.

  • Click on Dimensions.
  • You'll see a list of existing dimensions. Click on the three dots next to "Page path and screen class" or another existing dimension and click "Remove" until only the Landing Page + query string dimension remains. Alternatively, you can click "Add a dimension," a search window will appear, so type "landing page" and set a primary dimension and a default one.
  • You may also want to set it as the Default dimension from the dropdown so your report always opens with landing page as the selected primary option.
  • Click the blue Apply button at the bottom.

Step 3: Save the Report

Now, click the blue Save button in the top right corner. You'll be presented with two choices:

  • Save changes to current report: This overwrites the default "Pages and screens" report, which we don't recommend.
  • Save as a new report: This is the best option. It allows you to create your own dedicated landing page report without modifying the default GA4 reports.

Choose "Save as a new report" and give it a clear, descriptive name like "Custom - Landing Pages". Click Save.

You've just created your very own landing page section! The report is now saved, but it still isn't visible in the main navigation menu. Let’s add it for one-click access.

Step 4: Add Your Custom Report to the Navigation Menu

  1. Navigate back to the main Reports screen by clicking the "back" arrow if need be.
  2. In the main navigation menu, at the very bottom, click on Library. This section is where all reports, both standard and custom are stored.
  3. You should see the "Custom - Landing Pages" on the saved reports here.
  4. If you find a collection you wish to edit, press on the Edit collection button.
  5. On the next editing screen, find your new report under either "Life Cycle" or "User" collections. Drag your landing page report into the desired section and press Save.

That completes the setup. Now, when browsing the reporting section, your navigation side panel will have a familiar "Landing page Reports" section for one-click access to your custom landing report!

Going Deeper with Explorations

For more flexible analysis, GA4's Explorations are where a standard reporting section becomes less suitable. It lets us dive deep to view landing page conversion rates per device on different dates over time across any specific regions and age groups, providing vital information to assist in making business improvements faster based on available real-time, real-customer usage stats.

Let's find out how each visitor's category/type compares for landing page visits:

  1. Click on the Explore tab within your main navigation sections & create a new exploration, either "Blank" or "Free-form" exploration.
  2. Within your opened Variable tab, click the "+" sign below the dimension section name, and add dimensions following this list:
  3. Metrics to measure are: total users, individual conversion, etc. Use the "+" marks to add these metrics.
  4. Now, drag and drop these dimensions into their appropriate column and row sections: Device categories in the column section, Landing pages in the rows section, and then total "sessions conversions." Your data will show as 'Values.'

There you have it. This setup compares the number of conversions generated across devices like desktops, tablets, and mobile phones, right to each landing page found during any specified period! Use the "Sources/media" filters to get specific answers. Utilizing GA4 Explore features allows flexible approaches that generate reports effective for business needs when compared to standardized reporting, offering key insights necessary for strategic planning.

Final Thoughts

Finding landing page reports in GA4 involves a few extra clicks compared to Universal Analytics, but once you learn the process, it becomes second nature. Creating and saving a customized report for one-click access is the best solution GA4 offers. The Explorations function truly expands analytical capabilities by focusing on a single key metric which can guide any business team to smarter decisions.

The time spent navigating through dashboards can be a challenge, as each new question may require more steps in report building. This is where the Graphed platform shines, offering instant access with AI for custom analysis using simple text instructions without any coding. Simply ask "Show a list of conversion rates with all our site's content from Google search alone," and our system provides an instant, shareable, real-time online interactive visual.
