Before You Begin: What to Know Before Removing an Account

Before you click that "remove" button, there are a few important things to understand to avoid accidentally locking yourself out or losing important data.

You Need Full Admin Access

To remove a Page, Instagram account, or ad account (often called "assets"), you must have full administrative control over the Meta Business Suite (which Meta now often refers to as a "Business Portfolio"). If you only have partial access, like an employee or analyst role, the option to remove assets will be greyed out or completely hidden. If you can't see the remove button, the first thing to check is your permission level.

Removing vs. Deleting: They Aren't the Same

It's crucial to understand that removing an asset from your Business Suite does not delete the asset itself. Your Facebook Page will still exist, your Instagram profile will remain active, and your ad account history will be preserved (though potentially inaccessible). You are simply severing the connection between that asset and this specific Business Portfolio.

However, if your personal Facebook profile's only connection to that Page was through the Business Suite, you will lose access when you remove it. Always ensure you have another admin on the Page directly or that the rightful owner has access before removing it from your business manager.

A Special Warning for Ad Accounts

Be extremely careful when removing ad accounts. When an ad account is removed from a Business Suite, it is permanently deactivated. This means:

  • All active campaigns will be immediately stopped and cannot be restarted.
  • You will lose access to all historical campaign data, custom audiences, and reporting associated with that account.
  • The connected Facebook Pixel will be disconnected.

Generally, you should only remove an ad account if it was created by mistake or is completely obsolete. In most other cases, it's better to simply remove individual people's access to the ad account rather than removing the entire account from your business.

Step 1: Navigate to Your Business Settings

The control panel for all your connected assets is located in the Business Settings area. Meta often updates its interface, but the path to this section is usually consistent.

  1. Navigate to https://business.facebook.com/.
  2. If you manage multiple businesses, select the correct Business Portfolio from the dropdown in the top left.
  3. Look for the gear icon labeled "Settings" in the bottom-left navigation menu. Click it.
  4. If you don't see that, click the hamburger menu icon (☰) often labeled "All tools,", then choose "Business Settings". This will take you to the main control panel.

Once you're in the Business Settings, you'll see a navigation menu on the left with categories like "Users," "Accounts," and "Data Sources." This is where you'll find everything you need to manage your assets.

How to Remove a Facebook Page from Meta Business Suite

Perhaps a client relationship has ended, or you've sold a business asset. Removing a Facebook page is one of the most common tasks in Business Suite.

  1. From the Business Settings dashboard, click on "Accounts" in the left-hand navigation menu to expand it, then select "Pages."
  2. You will see a list of all Facebook Pages connected to your Business Portfolio in the central column. Select the Page you wish to remove.
  3. On the right side of the screen, you will see the Page's details and the people assigned to it. In the top-right corner of this pane, click the three dots icon (...) and select "Remove from Business Portfolio." Sometimes, this is a clear "Remove" button instead of a menu.
  4. A pop-up window will appear, warning you that this action cannot be undone. Read the warning carefully and, if you're sure, click the "Remove Page" button to confirm.

The Page will immediately be disconnected from your Business Suite. Any people (including yourself) who only had access to the Page through this Business Suite will no longer be able to manage it.

How to Remove an Instagram Account from Meta Business Suite

Disconnecting an Instagram account follows a nearly identical process, but there's one potential extra step to be aware of.

  1. In Business Settings, navigate to "Accounts" > "Instagram accounts."
  2. Select the Instagram account from the list that you want to disconnect.
  3. On the right-hand side, click the "Remove" button in the top corner.
  4. A confirmation window will appear. Click "Remove" again to finalize the process.

Troubleshooting: If a Professional Instagram Account Won't Disconnect

Sometimes, Meta Business Suite can be sticky about letting go of an Instagram account, especially if it's set as a Professional (Business or Creator) account. If you've tried the steps above and it's not working, you may need to temporarily switch the Instagram account back to a "Personal Account" directly from the mobile app.

Here’s how to do it on your phone:

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the menu (☰) in the top-right corner, then go to "Settings and privacy."
  3. For Business accounts, tap "Business tools and controls." For Creator accounts, tap "Creator tools and controls."
  4. Tap on "Switch account type."
  5. Select "Switch to personal account" and confirm.

Once you’ve switched to a personal account, try the removal process in Business Settings again. It should now disconnect without issue. After it's removed, the account owner can switch it back to a professional account if they wish.

How to Remove (Deactivate) an Ad Account

As mentioned earlier, this action is permanent and should be done with extreme caution. This permanently deactivates the ad account.

  1. In Business Settings, go to "Accounts" > "Ad accounts."
  2. Select the ad account you want to permanently deactivate.
  3. In the top right, click the three dots icon (...) and choose "Deactivate."
  4. A dialogue box will pop up with a significant warning about the consequences. You'll likely need to check a box acknowledging that you understand the action is irreversible.
  5. Click "Deactivate Ad Account" to permanently close it.

If you just need to get an ad account out of your way, a safer alternative is to remove yourself and other team members from it. Go to the "People" tab for that ad account and remove all users. The account will still exist in the Business Suite but will no longer appear as an option for day-to-day users who no longer need access.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

The "Remove" or "Deactivate" Button is Greyed Out

This is the most common issue, and 99% of the time, it's a permissions problem. You are not a full Admin of the Business Portfolio. Contact the person who owns the Business Portfolio (usually the person who set it up) and ask them to grant you "full control" admin permissions or to remove the asset for you.

Can't Remove the "Primary Page"

Every Meta Business Suite has a "Primary Page," which acts as the main identity for the business. The system will not let you remove this Page until you either:

  1. Assign another connected Page as the new primary Page. You can do this in the "Business Info" section of your Business Settings.
  2. Remove all other assets and users from the Business Suite first.

An Asset is "Owned by Another Business"

You may see a message that the Page or account is owned by another business entity. This means your Business Suite has been granted access as a partner, but it does not own the asset. To remove it, you need to contact an administrator of the owning Business Portfolio and have them revoke your partner access from their end.

Final Thoughts

Cleaning up your Meta Business Suite is good administrative hygiene that helps prevent unauthorized access and reduces clutter. By navigating to the Business Settings menu, you can easily access your Pages, Instagram accounts, and ad accounts to remove or deactivate them. Just remember to be especially careful with ad accounts, as deactivation is permanent and will stop all running campaigns.

Managing all your different marketing accounts can feel overwhelming, especially when you're flipping between platforms like Meta Business Suite, Google Analytics, and your CRM just to see what's happening. We built Graphed to solve this. It connects all your data sources in one place, so you can build real-time performance dashboards using simple, natural language. Instead of wrangling settings and exporting data, you can ask Graphed questions like "Show me my Facebook Ads ROI by campaign this month" and get instant answers.
