Step 1: Open Looker Studio and Create a New Data Source

First, head over to lookerstudio.google.com. In the top-left corner, click the + Create button and then select Data Source from the dropdown menu.

This is where you'll tell Looker Studio where to get the information for your report. You’ll see a list of over 20 "Google Connectors" for products like Google Sheets, Ads, and BigQuery, followed by hundreds of "Partner Connectors" for third-party platforms.

Step 2: Select the Google Analytics Connector

From the list of connectors, find and click on Google Analytics. It's usually one of the first options at the top.

Looker Studio will then ask you to authorize your account. Click the blue AUTHORIZE button. This gives Looker Studio permission to access the data housed in your Google Analytics account on your behalf. You'll see a standard Google sign-in pop-up - just select the account with access to your GA property.

Step 3: Choose Your GA4 Account and Property

Once you've authorized access, you'll see a panel with three columns:

  1. My Accounts: This lists all the Google Analytics accounts you have access to. Select the one that contains your website's data.
  2. Properties: After choosing an account, this column will populate with the corresponding GA4 properties within that account. Find and select your GA4 property.
  3. The third column should simply have a single GA4 to select. Prior to the deprecation of Universal Google Analytics, it included Web and App options, so now we are left with just the one.

After making your selection, a big blue Connect button will appear in the top-right corner. Click it.

You’re now looking at the data source configuration screen. It might look intimidating, but it’s just a list of all the "dimensions" (the 'what,' like Page Title or City) and "metrics" (the numbers, like Sessions or Conversions) that Looker Studio has pulled from your Google Analytics account.

You don't need to do anything here right now. Looker Studio automatically pulls in everything it can. In the future, you could come back here to create calculated fields or rename metrics, but for now, you’re all set.

Click the Add to Report button in the top-right corner to finalize the connection and start building your first dashboard.

What About Connecting Universal Analytics (UA) Data?

While Universal Google Analytics was officially retired by Google, your historic UA data may still be useful for reporting. If you’ve spent years carefully measuring key performance metrics, there's a good chance you'll need to access these pre-July 2023 data. This is useful for year-over-year reporting or analyzing long-term trends.

Luckily, the connection process is almost identical. The one distinction is that your Universal Analytics properties are flagged with a “UA” prefix so you can differentiate from newer GA4 properties. From there on, the remaining connection is largely the same. Keep in mind, you cannot combine UA data and GA4 data within the same chart, as they use fundamentally different measurement models.

You've successfully connected your data - now what? An empty dashboard can be overwhelming. Here are a few simple ideas to get you started on building a report that's actually useful.

1. Start with Top-Level KPIs using Scorecards
