How to Change Owner of Meta Business Suite

Cody Schneider8 min read

Transferring ownership of a Meta Business Suite account can feel like trying to find a light switch in a dark room. There’s no single "Change Owner" button, which leads to a lot of guessing and frustration. This guide will walk you through the correct process, step-by-step, to officially pass admin control to someone else.

First, Understand Meta Business Suite Roles

Meta's approach to "ownership" is less about a single title and more about who has the highest level of permissions. Instead of a formal owner, a Business Suite account is controlled by one or more people with "Full control," also known as Business Admins. The key to changing ownership is to grant this level of access to a new person and, if needed, remove the previous admin.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the primary roles:

  • Business admins (Full control): This is the highest level of access. Admins can manage all settings, add or remove people and assets (like Facebook Pages and ad accounts), change business information, and even delete the business account entirely. To transfer ownership, you must make the new person a Business Admin.
  • Employees (Partial access): People with this role have access only to the pages and tools specifically assigned to them. They can't make critical changes like adding admins or deleting the business. They can manage tasks like posting content or running ads, but their permissions are limited.

Essentially, the "owner" is anyone with full admin control. The process isn't about transferring a crown but about promoting another person to the same level of authority you have.

The Prerequisites: What You Need First

Save yourself a major headache by making sure you have everything in order before you start. Missing any of these steps can stall the process indefinitely.

1. You Must Be a Current Business Admin

Only a current Business Admin can add another admin. If you only have "Employee" or partial access, you won't see the options to grant full control. If you're not an admin, you'll need to ask an existing one to perform these steps for you. If the only admin has left the company, see our troubleshooting section below - it's a tricky situation.

2. The New Owner Must Have a Facebook Account

Meta Business Suite is tied to personal Facebook profiles for authentication. The person you plan to make a new admin must have an active Facebook account. To maintain professional boundaries, it’s best if they are already logged into this account on the device where they will accept the invitation.

3. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is Mandatory for Admins

To enhance security, Meta requires anyone with full control over a Business Account to have two-factor authentication enabled on their personal Facebook account. Before you try to grant admin access, ask the new person to confirm they have this set up. If not, they can enable it in their Facebook account's "Security and Login" settings.

4. Communicate with the New Admin

The process requires the new person to accept an email invitation. Let them know you'll be sending it so they can watch for it (and check their spam folder). This invitation is time-sensitive and usually expires after 30 days, so prompt action is important.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Transfer Admin Control

Once you’ve checked off the prerequisites, you’re ready to begin the transfer. Follow these steps carefully.

Step 1: Log in to Meta Business Suite

Go to https://business.facebook.com/ and log in. Make sure you've selected the correct business account from the dropdown menu in the top-left if you manage more than one.

Step 2: Go to Settings

In the bottom-left corner of the navigation sidebar, you will find a gear icon labeled "Settings." Click on it to open up your business account's settings panel. This is the central hub for all major account changes.

Step 3: Navigate to "People" under Business settings

Once you're in the Settings area, look for a section called "Business settings." Within this section, click on the "People" tab. This is where you'll find a list of everyone with access to your business account and manage their permissions. If you don't see it this way, you may see menu options on the left, simply choose "People" below the "Users" subcategory.

Step 4: Add the New Owner as a Person (If They Aren't Already)

If the person you're transferring ownership to isn't already in your Business Suite, you need to add them first.

  • Click the blue "Add people" button.
  • Enter their business email address in the field provided. It's crucial to use the correct email address, as this is where the invitation will be sent.
  • You can assign them "Partial access" for now. You will upgrade their permissions in the next step. It's often safer to grant access in stages.
  • Click "Next," assign them to their required assets (like specific pages or ad accounts), and then "Send invitation."

The recipient must open the email and follow the steps to accept the invitation before you can proceed.

Step 5: Grant Full Control (Admin Access)

This is the most critical step in the transfer of ownership.

  • In the "People" list, find the name of the person you want to make the new owner.
  • Click the three dots icon (...) on the far right of their name.
  • From the dropdown menu, select "Edit business permissions" or a similar option like "Manage Roles."
  • A screen will appear showing their current access levels. Look for the "Full control" option, often described as "Manage Everything." The interface changes often, but you are looking for the toggle or checkbox that assigns Business Admin status. Toggling 'Manage' On/Off is often required.
  • Select this option. Meta will display a strong warning confirming that you're about to give this person complete control over your business assets, with the ability to edit your own permissions or even remove you.
  • Confirm your choice. You may be required to re-enter your Facebook password to approve this significant change.

Once confirmed, the new user will have the same level of control as you.

Step 6: (Optional But Recommended) Remove Yourself From the Business Account

If you're truly transferring ownership and leaving the business, your final move is to remove yourself. But don't do this until you have absolute confirmation the new admin has access.

  • Log in from your own account.
  • Go back to the "People" section in Settings.
  • Find your own name in the list.
  • Click on your name, and you should see an option to "Remove yourself from [Business Name]."
  • Confirm the decision. Once you do this, you will immediately lose all access to the Business Suite account and its assets.

At this point, the transfer is complete. The new Admin is now the primary person in control of the Meta Business Suite account.

Troubleshooting Common Roadblocks

Sometimes things don't go as planned. Here are solutions to a few common issues.

"What if the only admin has left the company and we're locked out?"

This is the worst-case scenario and a giant operational bottleneck. First, check to see if anyone else has admin access you weren't aware of. If not, your only recourse is to contact Meta support. You will likely need to provide documentation proving you own the business, such as business registration documents, a government-issued ID, and a notarized letter explaining the situation. This process can be slow and isn't guaranteed, which is why we recommend having multiple admins.

"The new admin's invitation expired. What now?"

Easy fix! Go back to the "People" section. You'll see their pending invitation in the list. You should have an option to click "Resend" or a similar button to send them a fresh invitation link.

"I can't see the 'Full Control' option to grant admin access."

This almost always means you are not an admin yourself. You cannot grant permissions you do not have. Double-check your own role under your name in the "People" list. If it says "Partial Access," you will need to ask a current admin to handle the transfer for you.

Best Practices for Managing Your Business Account

To avoid ownership and security dramas in the future, follow these simple rules:

  • Have at Least Two Admins: Always maintain at least two trusted business admins (e.g., the owner and a key partner or manager). This creates redundancy, so if one person leaves or loses access to their Facebook account, the business isn't left in the lurch.
  • Perform Regular Audits: Once a quarter, review everyone on your "People" list. Remove former employees, contractors, or agencies who no longer need access. Ensure current team members have appropriate permissions for their roles - not everyone needs admin access.
  • Enforce Two-Factor Authentication: Don't just make it a rule - check to see that all admins have 2FA enabled on their Facebook accounts. This is the single best way to protect your business assets from unauthorized access.

Final Thoughts

Changing the owner of a Meta Business Suite account is done by promoting a new user to full admin status and, optionally, having the previous administrator remove themselves. Following these steps helps demystify the process and ensures a smooth and secure handover of your digital assets.
