Here’s the answer you need to know, straight up: No, you cannot directly edit the call-to-action button of an ad that is live or has already been published.

Facebook locks certain elements of an ad once it’s approved and running, including the creative (image/video), main text, headline, and the CTA button. This is done to preserve the ad's social proof (likes, comments, shares) and ensure consistency in the user experience of people who have already seen it.

But don’t worry, you're not stuck. While you can't hit an "edit" button on the live ad, there is a very simple and effective workaround that advertisers use every day. The solution is to duplicate the ad.

The Right Way to Change Your CTA: A Step-by-Step Guide

Duplicating your ad allows you to create an exact copy, which you can then edit freely before publishing it. It’s the standard, go-to method for making changes like updating your CTA. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Navigate to Facebook Ads Manager

Open your Facebook Ads Manager dashboard. You’ll see your campaigns listed. If you're not sure where to go, you can usually find it by searching "Ads Manager" in your Facebook search bar or going to facebook.com/adsmanager.

Step 2: Find Your Ad

Click on the campaign you want to work on. Then, click on the ad set that contains the ad you want to change. Finally, click over to the "Ads" tab to see all the ads within that ad set.

Your Path: Campaign Tab → Select Campaign → Ad Set Tab → Select Ad Set → Ad Tab.

Step 3: Select and Duplicate the Ad

Find the specific ad you want to change in the list. Hover over its name, and a "Duplicate" link will appear. Click it.

A pop-up will appear asking you to confirm where you want to copy the ad. To keep things simple, just stick with the "Original Campaign" and click the blue Duplicate button.

Step 4: Change the CTA Button

You are now in the ad creation screen, but you’re editing the copy of your original ad. You can tell because the ad name will be appended with "- Copy".

Scroll down to the "Ad Creative" section. Look for a dropdown menu labeled Call to Action. This is where the magic happens.

Click the dropdown and select the new CTA button you want to use. You'll see options like "Shop Now," "Book Now," "Learn More," "Sign Up," "Download," and more.

Step 5: Review and Publish

While you're here, it’s a good time to rename your ad so you can keep track of your new version. For instance, you could change "Product Ad Winter - Learn More" to "Product Ad Winter - Shop Now". This makes performance analysis much easier later on.

Once you’ve selected your new CTA and updated the ad name, click the green Publish button in the bottom right corner.

Step 6: Turn Off the Old Ad

After your new ad is published and approved, go back to the ads list. Find your original ad (the one with the old CTA) and toggle it off. This prevents you from paying for two nearly identical ads to run at the same time and lets Facebook put the budget towards your new, optimized version.

A Quick Way to A/B Test Your CTA Buttons

You don't have to guess which CTA is best - you can test it. Following the duplication method above is a great way to manually run a simple A/B test.

Here’s how you’d set it up:

  1. Duplicate the Ad: Instead of turning off the old ad in Step 6, let both the original and the duplicated copy run simultaneously.
  2. Isolate the Variable: Make sure the only difference between Ad A and Ad B is the call-to-action button. Everything else - creative, copy, headline, audience - must be identical.
  3. Run the Test: Let both ads run until they’ve gathered enough data to be statistically significant (aim for at least 1,000 impressions each, but more is better).
  4. Analyze the Results: Compare the key metrics. Don't just look at the Click-Through Rate (CTR). The most important metric is the one tied to your goal. If you want sales, see which CTA generated more purchases at a lower Cost Per Purchase. The "Shop Now" button might get a lower CTR than "Learn More," but it could drive far more conversions.
