Two Ways to Change Your Canvas Size in Power BI

There are two primary methods for resizing your Power BI canvas: using the pre-set default sizes or defining your own custom dimensions. Both are handled in the same location.

1. Using Standard Pre-Set Sizes

Power BI comes with a few built-in sizes that work well for common use cases. This is the quickest way to adjust your canvas if you don't have super specific requirements.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Make sure you don't have any visuals selected. Click on the blank background of your report page.
2. With the page selected, look for the Visualizations pane on the right-hand side of your screen.
3. Click the Format your report page icon (it looks like a paintbrush). This opens the formatting options for the entire page.
4. Expand the Canvas settings section. You’ll see a dropdown menu labeled Type.
5. By default, this is set to 16:9, which is a standard widescreen aspect ratio. You can change this to another preset, like:

Once you select a new type, the canvas will resize instantly. From there, you can rearrange your visuals to fit the new layout.

2. Creating a Custom Canvas Size

For most situations, you’ll want more control over the dimensions. This is especially true when designing for a specific screen resolution or creating those long, scrollable reports.

Follow the same first four steps as above to get to the Canvas settings menu.

1. In the Type dropdown menu, select Custom.
2. Two new fields will appear just below: Height and Width. These values are measured in pixels (px).
3. Simply enter your desired dimensions into these fields and hit Enter. The canvas will immediately adjust.

Example Scenarios for Custom Sizing:

• Designing for a Standard HD Monitor: Most business monitors use a 1920x1080 resolution. To fill the screen perfectly, you would set your canvas Width to 1920 and Height to 1080.
• Creating a Long, Scrollable "Infographic" Report: If you want to create a report that users can scroll through vertically, you might keep the width manageable but dramatically increase the height. For example, a Width of 1000 and a Height of 4000 would create a tall, continuous canvas perfect for detailed storytelling.

Changing your canvas size is only half the battle. If your Page view settings aren't correct, Power BI might automatically shrink your beautiful custom canvas to fit the screen, defeating the whole purpose.

Here’s how to make sure your canvas is displayed as intended:

1. Go to the View tab in the main ribbon at the top of the Power BI window.
2. Look for the Page view section.

For custom canvases designed for specific monitors, setting the page view to Actual size is typically the best choice. For tall, scrollable reports, always choose Fit to width.
