It’s a frustratingly common scenario: you’ve crafted the perfect Instagram ad, you hit publish, and then… nothing. It’s stuck "Pending Approval," looming in your account without moving forward. Why Your Instagram Ad is Stuck in "Pending Approval"

First, it helps to understand what's happening behind the scenes. Every ad you submit goes through Meta’s Ad Review System, a process that uses automated tools and sometimes human reviewers to check your ad against their advertising policies. This typically takes less than 24 hours but can occasionally take longer.

If your ad seems permanently stuck, it's usually for one of these reasons:

  • Policy Flags: Even a slight perceived violation of Meta’s advertising policies can flag your ad for a longer, manual review. This could be anything from a problematic headline or a misleading claim to an issue with the landing page you linked to.
  • High Ad Volume: During peak advertising seasons like Black Friday or other major holidays, Meta’s review systems get backed up. More ads mean longer wait times for everyone.
  • New or Inactive Ad Account: If your ad account is new or hasn't been used in a while, Meta tends to scrutinize its first few ads more closely. This is to establish trust and ensure you're a legitimate advertiser.
  • Editing During Review: Making edits to an ad, its audience, or its budget while it’s already “In Review” can reset its place in the queue and cause further delays.
  • Technical Glitches: Sometimes, it’s just a bug. A simple technical error can cause an ad to get stuck in review purgatory with no clear solution other than to start over.

Before you cancel, it's often worth waiting a full 24-48 hours, especially if it doesn't seem to violate any policies. But if you’ve noticed an error or simply can't wait any longer, deleting it is the right move.

How to Cancel a Pending Instagram Ad: Two Methods

A quick but important clarification: there is no official "Cancel Review" button. The way to 'cancel' a pending ad is to delete it. Once deleted, the review stops, and the ad will never go live or spend any of your budget. You can then address the issue and publish a new, corrected version.

There are two places you can do this: directly in the Instagram app or through Meta Ads Manager. We strongly recommend using Ads Manager as it offers far more control and visibility, which is the professional standard for managing Meta ads.

Method 1: Deleting a Pending Ad in The Instagram App (For Boosted Posts)

This method is best suited if you originally promoted or "boosted" a post directly from your Instagram profile. It’s quick for simple tasks but less powerful than Ads Manager.

  1. Go to your Profile: Open the Instagram app and navigate to your main profile page.
  2. Access "Ad Tools": Tap on the "Ad Tools" button, which is usually located below your bio.
  3. Find the Ad: Under the "Manage" section, you should see your promotional ad with the status "Pending." Tap on the ad to view its details.
  4. Delete the Ad: Look for a button or an icon for more options (often three dots ...). Within this menu, you should find the "Delete Ad" or “Delete Promotion” option. Tap it and confirm your choice.

Once you confirm, the promoted post will be removed from the review queue and deleted from your active promotions.

Method 2: Deleting a Pending Ad in Meta Ads Manager (Recommended)

Meta Ads Manager is the central hub for all advertising on both Facebook and Instagram. It gives you precise control over every element of your campaigns. Using it is a must if you're serious about advertising.

Here’s the step-by-step process:

  1. Navigate to Ads Manager: Open your browser and go to https://www.facebook.com/adsmanager. Make sure you're logged into the correct Facebook account associated with your Instagram business profile.
  2. Choose the Right Level: Ads Manager is organized into three tiers: Campaigns, Ad Sets, and Ads. You can see these as tabs at the top of your dashboard. Navigate to the level you want to delete.
  3. Locate the Item to Delete: Find the campaign, ad set, or ad that’s stuck in review. The "Delivery" column will likely show "In Review" or "Processing." You can use the search and filter functions if you have a lot of items to sort through.
  4. Select and Delete: Check the box next to the name of the item you want to delete. This will activate the toolbar above the list. Click on the trash can icon which represents the "Delete" action.
  5. Confirm Your Choice: A confirmation pop-up will appear. Double-check that you've selected the correct item and then confirm the deletion.

This action is permanent and cannot be undone. The campaign, ad set, or ad will be removed from the review queue immediately, and you will not be billed for it.

Which Should You Delete? Campaign, Ad Set, or Ad?

Understanding the hierarchy is helpful so you don't delete more than you need to:

  • Ad: This is your actual creative - the image, video, caption, and headline. If you just made a typo or want to swap the visual, delete only the ad. You can then add a new, corrected ad to the existing ad set.
  • Ad Set: This controls the audience, budget, schedule, and placements. If you realized you targeted the wrong audience or set the budget too high, delete the ad set. That will also delete all ads within it.
  • Campaign: This is the highest level, defining your overall advertising objective (e.g., Traffic, Sales, Leads). If the entire idea was wrong or you no longer need to run the promotion, delete the campaign.

In most "stuck in review" cases, there’s an issue with the ad creative or its landing page, so just deleting the specific ad is often sufficient.

Best Practices to Avoid Getting Stuck "In Review"

Canceling ads is a pain. The best approach is to set up your ads correctly from the start to minimize the chances of getting flagged or delayed. Here are a few tips:

1. Read The Meta Advertising Policies

It's boring but necessary. Most rejected or delayed ads are due to an unintentional policy violation. Take 15 minutes to review the common pitfalls, especially those related to prohibited and restricted content. Pay close attention to rules about making claims about health, finance, or anything that feels 'before-and-after'.

2. Check Your Landing Page

Meta's review bot will crawl the destination URL in your ad. A landing page that doesn't work, is slow to load, or has content that doesn't match the ad's promise can cause delays or rejections. Even having too many pop-ups can be an issue. Always test your link before publishing.

3. Set It and Forget It (Initially)

Resist the urge to make small tweaks while your ad is in review. Every edit you make can reset its position in the review queue. It's usually faster to delete the ad and create a new one instead of editing a pending ad.

4. Give Your Account a Good Warm-Up

New ad accounts often face more scrutiny. Before you launch a high-stakes campaign, run a simple, low-budget "warm-up" campaign like a page likes or traffic campaign. This helps build a history of compliance and can speed up future approvals.

Final Thoughts

Canceling an Instagram ad stuck in review boils down to deleting it, either through the app or (preferably) in Meta Ads Manager. This permanently removes it from the queue, prevents any spending, and lets you tackle the problem fresh. Following advertising best practices and understanding Meta’s policies are the best ways to keep your ads from getting caught in limbo again.

Managing ad campaigns involves much more than just getting them approved, it requires a deep understanding of what's working and what's not. Often, the real challenge is pulling together metrics from Facebook Ads, Google Analytics, Shopify, and your other platforms to see the full customer journey. That's why we built Graphed. We connect to all your marketing and sales data sources, enabling you to use simple, natural language to create dashboards and answer questions in seconds.
