Since Google’s automatic filter isn’t perfect, it’s important to learn how to spot the signs of bot traffic yourself. Think of yourself as a data detective looking for clues that just don't add up. Here are a few places to start looking:
1. Look for Unexplained Traffic Spikes
Go to your Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition report. Real human traffic usually follows predictable patterns. You'll see dips on weekends, peaks during business hours, or increases after you send out a newsletter. Bot traffic, on the other hand, often looks completely unnatural - like a massive, sharp spike on a random Tuesday at 3 AM that immediately drops back to normal.
What to do: If you see a suspicious spike, change the date range to just that day. Then, start drilling down into other dimensions like geography or traffic source to find the cause.
2. Analyze Your Traffic Sources
Stay in the Traffic acquisition report and look at the Session source / medium dimension. Bot traffic often comes from strange places. Watch out for:
- Suspicious Referral Traffic: Do you see a sudden influx of traffic from a random, low-quality website you've never heard of? Sites with names like "get-more-traffic-fast.com" or other spammy-sounding URLs are a huge red flag. This is known as referral spam.
- Unusually High Direct Traffic: A sudden, large increase in "Direct / (none)" traffic that doesn't correspond to any offline marketing campaign or brand-building effort can sometimes be a sign of bots that aren't reporting a source.
3. Audit Geographic and Technical Data
Bots often run on servers located in specific data center hubs. You can investigate this in the Reports > Demographics > Demographic details report. Change the primary dimension to "Country" or "City."
Look for:
- A large volume of traffic from a single city an ocean away when you only do business in North America.
- A surprising amount of traffic from a city known for its huge data centers, like Ashburn, Virginia or Boardman, Oregon.
- (not set) values making up a significant portion of traffic in dimensions like Browser, Screen resolution, or Operating System. While some real users might have privacy settings that cause this, a large percentage is often an indicator of bot activity.
4. Check for Terrible Engagement Metrics
Since bots typically visit one page and leave, they leave a trail of breadcrumbs in their engagement data. When you're looking at any of your reports, pay attention to the Average engagement time column. If you see specific sources, countries, or campaigns with an average engagement time of just one or two seconds and an Engagement rate near 0%, you're almost certainly looking at bot traffic.
5 Steps to Proactively Filter Out Bad Data
Finding bot traffic is one thing, getting rid of it is another. Here are five actionable steps you can take to clean up your data in GA4 going forward.
Step 1: Define and Exclude Internal Traffic
The first and easiest type of non-customer traffic to filter out is your own. Clicks from your team, your developers, and your partner agencies can inflate traffic and skew your metrics. Excluding this is a best practice for data hygiene.
How to do it in GA4:
- Navigate to Admin in the bottom-left corner.
- In the Property column, click on Data Streams and select your web data stream.
- Click on Configure tag settings.
- Under the Settings menu, click Show more, then select Define internal traffic.
- Click Create and give your rule a name (e.g., "Office IP"). Leave the
traffic_typevalue as "internal." Enter your company's IP address. You can find yours by searching "what is my IP address" on Google. - Next, you need to tell GA4 to actually filter this traffic out. Go back to Admin > Data Settings > Data Filters and click Create Filter. Choose the Internal Traffic filter. Give it a name, select "Exclude" as the filter operation, and activate the filter.
Step 2: Create Custom IP and ISP Exclusions
When you identify suspicious traffic patterns from specific locations, you can often trace them back to an IP address or an Internet Service Provider (ISP), especially if they originate from a data center. You can use the same Data Filter process as above to exclude these annoying sources.
How to do it in GA4:
- Go to Admin > Data Settings > Data Filters and click Create Filter.
- This time, select the Developer Traffic filter type.
- Give the filter a name like "Exclude Ashburn Data Center."
- Set the filter operation to "Exclude."
- Activate the filter. Unlike the Internal Traffic filter which uses the
traffic_typeparameter, the Developer filter works directly on traffic that you are sending in debugger mode or custom parameters that you've told it to recognize as developer traffic to exclude as spam, so this would happen upstream of Google Analytics using server-side tagging. - The simpler approach for a known spam IP address is to use a server-level block using your .htaccess file or a security tool like Cloudflare.
Step 3: Filter by Hostname
This is an effective technique to combat a specific type of spam called "ghost spam." This happens when spammers send fake data directly to Google Analytics servers referencing your Measurement ID, without ever actually visiting your site. In these cases, the "hostname" - which should be your website's domain - will be something else or (not set). You can create a filter to only include data from your valid hostnames.
How to do it in GA4:
- First, identify your valid hostnames. Go to Reports > Pages and screens and add Hostname as a secondary dimension. Make a list of all the legitimate domains where your GA4 tag is installed (e.g.,
yourwebsite.com,blog.yourwebsite.com,shop.yourwebsite.com). - Next, go to Admin > Data Streams > [Select your stream] > Configure tag settings > Show more > List unwanted referrals.
- Here, you can set the
Referral domain contains "unwanted-referral-domain.com"to block "regular referrals." However, for ghost spam, where thehostnameis the problem, a server-side solution or a more advanced filter in Google Tag Manager is preferable to make sure the data in Analytics is always what you expect.

Step 4: Implement a CAPTCHA
While this isn't a Google Analytics feature, it's a critical website-level defense.
